The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a severe heatwave warning for much of the country during the Eid ul Adha holidays and the following week. The warning comes as a high-pressure system is expected to develop over Pakistan on June 7, raising temperatures across the nation.
From June 8 onwards, temperatures are expected to soar 5-7°C above normal in the upper half of the country, including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. In the southern half, including upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, temperatures are likely to remain 4-6°C above normal.
The heat will also bring dust storms and gusty winds over the plains due to excessive surface heating. The PMD has advised the public, particularly children, the elderly, and women, to avoid prolonged sun exposure and stay hydrated. Citizens are urged to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
The rising temperatures, especially in the northern areas, may accelerate the snowmelt rate, potentially impacting water flows in rivers. Authorities have advised careful water usage and recommended that farmers plan their crop activities accordingly.
The Met Office has urged all concerned departments to remain alert and take action to mitigate risks associated with the extreme weather conditions. The public is also encouraged to keep up with official weather updates for the latest information and safety tips.
