LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has appointed Ali Mustafa Dar as her adviser on Artificial Intelligence and Special Initiatives, creating a new department aimed at fostering innovation, technology adoption, and AI-driven projects in the province. This appointment, effective immediately, grants Ali Dar the status and powers of a provincial minister, including the right to attend Punjab Assembly sessions.
In his new role, Ali Dar will focus on the development and implementation of forward-looking projects that aim to improve governance, create job opportunities, and enhance service delivery, with a strong emphasis on emerging technologies and AI-enabled solutions.
Ali, who has an academic background in science and technology, studied Software Engineering at University College London (UCL) and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). He moved to the UK for higher education in 2000, after studying at Aitchison College in Lahore.
Having worked for over two decades in the international arena, Ali has been actively involved in pro-bono work for Pakistan since the PML-N’s victory in the 2024 elections. His role behind the scenes has included facilitating high-level international engagements, convincing business figures from the tech and real estate sectors to visit and invest in Pakistan.
Ali Dar is also a passionate advocate for autism awareness in Pakistan. He has been involved in initiatives supporting children with autism and has garnered praise for raising awareness through his personal experience as the father of Ibrahim, an 18-year-old with autism.
He is married to Asma Nawaz Sharif, the daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the younger sister of Maryam Nawaz. Ali is the eldest son of Senator Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister.
Before returning to Pakistan in 2024, Ali spent time with his family in the UK. In the private sector, he founded HDS Group of Companies, a prominent real estate development conglomerate in the UAE, and served as its CEO until 2024. The company is now overseen by his younger brother, Hasnain Dar.
