ISLAMABAD: President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, has said that the Kashmir dispute remains the core cause of hostility between Pakistan and India, warning that without a peaceful and just resolution, South Asia will continue to face the threat of conflict.
In an exclusive interview with Almaz Mahmood Nasibova, Head of the Media and Information Literacy Center of Azerbaijan and Vice Rector of the Tele-Radio Academy AZ Television, Barrister Sultan stressed that peace in the region hinges on resolving the Kashmir issue according to the United Nations Security Council resolutions.
“The real and most important party to the Kashmir dispute is the Kashmiri people,” he said, noting that India’s illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir has been at the heart of tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours since the partition of the subcontinent.
Barrister Sultan accused India of staging a false flag operation in Pahalgam and attempting to pin the blame on Pakistan in order to sway international opinion. He asserted that the Indian government’s propaganda campaign collapsed when the Pakistan Army decisively responded to Indian aggression and exposed New Delhi’s motives.
“The Kashmir issue has been on the UN agenda for decades, yet it remains unresolved,” he said, adding that the international community must break its silence and actively intervene to prevent further escalation.
Barrister Sultan reiterated that the absence of a diplomatic solution to the Kashmir conflict keeps the region on a war footing. “Without a resolution of this long-standing issue, the clouds of war will continue to hover over South Asia,” he cautioned.
He urged world powers, particularly the United Nations, to uphold international law and ensure the implementation of the UN resolutions that recognize the right of Kashmiris to self-determination.
In closing, the AJK President made a strong appeal to global leaders, urging them to acknowledge the urgency of the situation and support efforts toward a peaceful settlement. “The region deserves peace, but that peace is not possible without justice for the people of Kashmir,” he said.
