Imran Khan attack convict handed additional four-year jail term for illegal arms possession

ISLAMABAD: A court in Wazirabad has awarded an additional four-year prison sentence to Muhammad Naveed, who is already serving two life terms for the assassination attempt on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan.

Judicial Magistrate Fazl Elahi found Naveed guilty under the Punjab Arms (Amended) Ordinance 2015 in a case related to illegal possession of weapons. After examining the evidence in FIR No 742/2022, the court sentenced him to four years of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs40,000.

The magistrate ordered that the latest sentence run concurrently with the other sentences already being served by the convict.

According to a warrant issued on February 2, the superintendent of Central Jail Gujranwala has been authorised to take Naveed into custody for the execution of the sentence.

The case stems from the November 3, 2022 attack on Imran Khan during the PTI’s long march in Wazirabad, when Naveed opened fire on the rally. The former premier was shot in the shin and sustained injuries, while Senator Faisal Javed and several others were wounded. A PTI worker was killed in the incident.

Following the attack, Imran Khan had accused the then Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government and certain officials of involvement in the incident.

Police arrested Naveed at the scene, and the FIR was formally registered at City Police Station on November 7. A joint investigation team was later constituted under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997.

In April 2025, an anti-terrorism court sentenced Naveed to two life terms under Section 302(b) of the Pakistan Penal Code for premeditated murder and Section 7(a) of the ATA for acts of terrorism. Two co-accused, Tayyab Jahangir Butt and Waqas, were acquitted after being given the benefit of the doubt.
