India, Poland spar diplomatically after Jaishankar criticises Sikorski’s Pakistan visit

ISLAMABAD: A diplomatic dispute has emerged between India and Poland after Indian External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar publicly criticised Polish Deputy Prime Minister Radoslaw Sikorski over his recent visit to Pakistan, according to Indian media reports.

The Hindu reported that Sikorski’s visit marked the first high level engagement between Poland and Pakistan since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to Warsaw in August 2024, a trip that also included a visit to Ukraine.

According to the report, Jaishankar, speaking in televised remarks, said he wished to raise Sikorski’s “recent travels to the region”, a statement widely interpreted as a reference to the Polish minister’s visit to Pakistan in October last year.

During Sikorski’s two day visit to Islamabad, Pakistan and Poland agreed to strengthen political and economic cooperation. Officials from both sides said at the time that they aimed to elevate bilateral relations into what they described as a comprehensive and mutually beneficial partnership.

The Hindu reported that during talks between Jaishankar and Sikorski, the Indian minister said Poland should demonstrate zero tolerance towards terrorism and should not contribute to what he described as terrorist infrastructure in India’s neighbourhood.

The report said the remarks were a direct reference to Sikorski’s October 2025 visit to Pakistan, during which he held meetings with the country’s senior leadership.

Jaishankar was also quoted as saying that Sikorski, a former journalist who reported from Afghanistan during the 1980s, was well acquainted with the region and would be fully aware of what he described as the longstanding challenge of cross border terrorism.

According to the report, the Indian foreign minister also objected to earlier comments made by Sikorski regarding India’s imports of Russian oil. Sikorski had said earlier this month in Paris that he was satisfied with India’s reduction in Russian oil purchases, stating that such imports were financing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war effort.

“I have repeatedly underlined that the selective targeting of India is both unfair and unjustified. I do so again today,” Jaishankar was quoted as telling Sikorski.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, Sikorski said the two sides shared concerns about terrorism but added that India’s participation in the Zapad 2025 military exercises in Russia and Belarus was viewed by Poland as threatening, the report said.

India took part in Russia’s Zapad joint military drills with Belarus in September 2025, some of which were conducted close to Nato borders.

“We all have regional concerns and we all have neighbours, and with neighbours you have opportunities and challenges,” Sikorski was quoted as saying, adding that India and Poland were aligned in their views on terrorism.

“We also have concerns. India took part in the Zapad exercises in Russia that we find threatening,” he said.
