Doctors warn of post-festival health risks following Eidul Azha celebrations

KARACHI: Doctors are cautioning the public about the health risks associated with overeating and improper meat storage following Eidul Azha celebrations. The festival, known for its rich meat dishes, often leads to a rise in gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and abdominal pain.

According to Dr. Imran Sarwar, Emergency In-Charge at Civil Hospital, there is a significant increase in stomach-related ailments during Eidul Azha, primarily caused by excessive meat consumption and spicy food. The doctor also highlighted the risks posed by prolonged power outages and high temperatures, which can spoil frozen meat and lead to the growth of harmful toxins.

To avoid foodborne illnesses, Dr. Sarwar recommends proper storage of meat using airtight containers and advises against using plastic bags, as they do not adequately preserve the quality of meat. He also suggests moderation in portion sizes, with adults limiting daily meat intake to 100-150 grams and children to 70 grams. Those with chronic health conditions should exercise extra caution.

Additionally, Dr. Sarwar noted that goat meat is generally lighter and easier to digest than beef, but it should still be prepared with mild spices and accompanied by yogurt, fresh salads, fruits, and vegetables for better digestion.

Doctors urge the public to exercise restraint in their food consumption and to follow safe food storage practices to ensure a healthy and enjoyable post-festival period.
