Sharif nominates loyalist for Punjab governor office

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Mohammad Baligh ur-Rehman has been nominated for the office of Punjab governor.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent the summary suggesting the same to President Dr Arif Alvi.

Rehman had earlier served as education minister in former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s cabinet between August 2017 and May 2018. He was elected as an MP on PML-N’s ticket for the first time in 2008 and then again in 2013.

The Shehbaz-led government had approached the president twice for the removal of incumbent Punjab Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema.

Cheema has been causing problems for the PML-N in Punjab ever since he was given the post by former premier Imran Khan during his last days in power. The governor had triggered a constitutional crisis after he refused to administer the oath of office to then chief minister-elect Hamza Shehbaz.

Hamza was finally sworn in after the Lahore High Court ordered National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to administer the oath to Hamza.
