DG ISPR confronts journalist over questions on Field Marshal Asim Munir’s appointment

ISLAMABAD: In a tense moment during a press briefing on December 5, 2025, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) sharply rebuked journalist Ajmal Jami after he raised questions about the appointment of Field Marshal Asim Munir as Chief of Defence Forces. The journalist’s inquiry into the timing and constitutional basis of the decision was swiftly dismissed by the DG ISPR, who emphasized that such matters are defined by the Constitution and should not be subjected to public debate.

The Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) was confronted by journalist Ajmal Jami during a press briefing regarding the recent appointment of Field Marshal Asim Munir as Chief of Defence Forces. Jami raised concerns about the selection process, specifically questioning why the appointment was made from within the Army and whether officers from other branches of the military could have been considered. He also sought clarification on the timing of the announcement, pointing out that initial information had been shared earlier and the formal notification came later. According to Jami, this raised suspicions of possible political influence or a hidden agenda behind the decision.

In response, the DG ISPR expressed strong disapproval of the journalist’s line of questioning, stating that the answers to such matters are clearly laid out in the Constitution of Pakistan. He advised Jami to review the relevant constitutional provisions and noted that decisions of this nature are strictly within the purview of the Constitution and should not be debated publicly by journalists or the military’s public relations wing.

The DG ISPR further remarked that capable individuals often direct their energies toward discussing matters he described as “non-issues,” which serve only to create narratives where none exist. He emphasized that speculation about internal government or military processes was unnecessary and that these decisions were being carried out in full compliance with the Constitution.

When Jami clarified that he was merely seeking justification and clarity, the DG ISPR responded by questioning what further clarity was needed, stating that the constitutional text was clear and written in plain English. According to him, it should be easily understood by anyone with a basic grasp of the law.

After this exchange, the briefing continued without further incident. The DG ISPR’s response highlighted the military’s firm stance on such appointments, reinforcing that they are not subject to public debate or speculation, especially when grounded in the country’s constitutional framework.
