Karachi heat index hits 49°C as humidity worsens heatwave conditions

KARACHI: Karachi remained in the grip of hot weather on Wednesday, with the feels-like temperature climbing to 49°C because of high humidity as a heatwave continued to affect parts of the country.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the city’s actual temperature was recorded at 37°C on Wednesday, while relative humidity stood at 56%.

The Met Office had issued a heatwave warning for several areas of the country last week, saying the prevailing spell is expected to continue until June 12.

Hot spell to persist in Karachi

In an advisory issued on Saturday, the PMD said Karachi is likely to face very hot conditions during the forecast period. It said the city’s maximum temperature is expected to remain between 40°C and 43°C from June 8 to 12.

The department also warned that night-time temperatures are expected to increase during the same period, a factor likely to add to discomfort and heat stress.

Extreme heat forecast for Sindh and Balochistan

The PMD said temperatures are likely to rise well above normal in most parts of the country, with some districts of Sindh and Balochistan expected to face severe heat between 48°C and 51°C.

It said maximum temperatures in Sindh and Balochistan are likely to stay 4°C to 6°C above normal and may reach 48°C to 51°C in Sukkur, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Larkana, Mohenjo Daro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, Khairpur, Naushero Feroze, Sibbi, Turbat and Panjgur from June 7 to 12.

Public advised to take precautions

The PMD warned that the heatwave could have serious consequences for public health and everyday life. It advised the public, particularly children, women and senior citizens, to take extra precautions during the ongoing hot spell.
