Karachi’s 'feels-like' heat index climbs to 48°C

KARACHI: Karachi remained hot and humid on Tuesday, with the maximum temperature reaching 36.5 degrees Celsius, while high moisture levels in the air pushed the feels-like temperature to around 48°C, according to the Met Office.

The weather office said relative humidity stayed at 62 per cent, which sharply increased discomfort across the city. An official said that at about 2pm, the temperature was 36°C, humidity stood at 60pc and southwest winds were blowing at 21 kilometres per hour.

In other parts of Sindh, intense heatwave conditions continued in the upper and central districts. The Met Office said Dadu recorded 48°C, while Sukkur, Rohri and Khairpur were around 46.5°C. The Pakistan Meteorological Department had warned last week that heatwave conditions were likely to persist across Sindh, with temperatures remaining four to six degrees above normal in many areas.

For Wednesday, the Met Office said Karachi’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 36°C, though humidity may rise beyond the 70pc mark.
