KARACHI: As a severe heatwave continues to grip parts of the country, Karachi is preparing for soaring temperatures with the mercury expected to reach 40°C today, while humidity levels and stagnant winds could push the “feels-like” temperature to a punishing 45°C, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The Met Office has warned that the intense heat will persist throughout the week, with daytime temperatures likely to remain between 40°C and 41°C from Wednesday through Friday.
Humidity in the city is currently at 74%, while winds from the west are blowing at a moderate speed of 17 kilometres per hour, insufficient to ease the oppressive conditions.
Meteorological analyst Owais Hyder said a low-pressure system located over Maharashtra in neighbouring India is not expected to bring any relief to Karachi. As a result, no rainfall is forecast for Sindh, including the provincial capital, over the coming days.
The PMD has urged residents to take necessary precautions to avoid heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses. Citizens are advised to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Those who must go out are encouraged to use protective gear such as caps, scarves, or umbrellas and remain hydrated throughout the day.
Doctors are recommending increased fluid intake, including water, lemon water, yoghurt-based drinks, and lassi. Light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing is also advised, along with a diet of fresh, easily digestible meals, avoiding heavy and oily foods.
Medical professionals are also alerting vulnerable populations — including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions — to remain especially cautious during the ongoing heatwave.
With no respite expected in the immediate future, authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant and take all necessary measures to stay safe during this period of extreme weather.
