KARACHI: Karachi’s temperature reached 37°C by 1pm on Wednesday, while the feels-like temperature climbed to 49°C because of humidity, as heatwave conditions continued in parts of the country.
According to data shared by the Met Office, relative humidity was recorded at 56 per cent at 1pm, with southwest winds blowing at 26 kilometres per hour. A day earlier, the city also experienced hot and humid weather, with the feels-like temperature recorded at 48°C.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department had issued a heatwave warning for various parts of the country last week. It said the heatwave is expected to continue till June 12, with temperatures likely to remain up to seven degrees Celsius above normal during the period under the influence of a high-pressure system.
The Met Office said Karachi’s maximum temperature was likely to stay between 40°C and 43°C from June 8 to June 12, adding that night-time temperatures were also expected to increase. The department advised children, women and senior citizens to take extra care during the heatwave. Farmers were asked to plan crop-related activities according to weather conditions and protect their livestock, while the public was advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm and to stay adequately hydrated.
