SC defers decision on Imran Khan meeting, flags case admissibility

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday declined a request for an immediate meeting between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his lawyer, Latif Khosa, while issuing a notice to the government and fixing the matter for hearing on Tuesday.

Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, who heard the plea, said no order could be passed without first notifying the other party. He observed that the court must determine the admissibility of the application before considering any relief, noting that related matters were already pending before other courts.

The chief justice further remarked that, prima facie, the petition appeared to have lost its effectiveness due to a previous court order dated August 24, 2023, adding that the bench would examine whether the case could proceed. Khosa pressed for permission to meet his client, but the chief justice reiterated that even such a request required notice to the respondents. The hearing was then adjourned until Tuesday.

Separately, the Supreme Court constituted three-member benches to hear appeals against the acquittal of Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the Cipher case. The court also dismissed Imran Khan’s bail application in the Al-Qadir Trust case on grounds of ineffectiveness.

In addition, petitions seeking cancellation of bail granted to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana case were dismissed on similar grounds. Meanwhile, a separate three-member bench was formed to hear bail cancellation petitions related to the May 9 Lahore incidents, with hearings in both the Cipher and May 9 cases adjourned for two weeks.
