MUZAFFARGARH: Chairman of the Senate, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, on Saturday said the conviction of former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed would strengthen public confidence in Pakistan’s accountability system.
Speaking to local media at the residence of former MNA Mehr Irshad Sial, Gilani said recent developments had challenged the long-standing perception that influential figures were beyond the reach of the law. “It was widely believed that powerful people could escape accountability. This perception has now been proven wrong,” he added.
Gilani also reaffirmed his commitment to development in South Punjab, citing projects undertaken during the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) tenure, including the Tayyab Erdogan Hospital and the Head Muhammadwala Bridge, built with Turkish support.
On the longstanding demand for a separate province in South Punjab, Gilani said it remained the only sustainable solution to address regional deprivation. He noted that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had consistently advocated the creation of new provinces where consensus existed.
Responding to questions on other issues, the Senate chairman emphasised dialogue as the preferred method to resolve disputes, including ongoing talks with goods transporters to address their concerns.
