A crash video posted by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) to promote road-safety awareness has instead triggered criticism of the authorities, after social-media users said an official billboard helped cause the accident.
The Instagram video, uploaded by the PSCA, shows a rickshaw overturning at an intersection, shared with the caption asking followers to identify the cause of the collision. While some blamed the rickshaw driver, a few turned the focus back on the state.
“Accident happened mainly due to the rickshaw driver’s mistake. However, it is also important to highlight that road corners and edges should not be used for advertisements,” the user wrote, adding that a government flex placed on the corner “blocked visibility and became another major reason the driver could not see the road clearly.”, one user commented.
At the Mall Road–Canal Road intersection, where the crash reportedly took place, several commenters pointed out that a large Traffic Police billboard had been installed directly on the corner, narrowing the driver’s line of sight. Some users also claimed that one of the traffic signals at the junction was not functioning at the time, creating further confusion for motorists approaching from the side road. Together, they argued, the obstructive placement of an official safety billboard and the malfunctioning signal formed a hazardous setup that left drivers with little reaction time, ultimately worsening the conditions that led to the rickshaw’s overturning.
Similar kind of opinions have been voiced under PSCA’s videos where citizens use official footage to highlight obstructive government banners, poor road design and faulty signage—undercutting the agency’s attempt to pin crashes solely on “negligent drivers”.
As PSCA continues to rely on viral crash clips for public messaging, its own videos are increasingly doubling as evidence folders for viewers who say the state shares the blame for the very accidents it posts online.
