NEW YORK: Digital billboards mounted on mobile trucks drove across New York City this week, displaying messages calling on the United Nations to uphold its commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and ensure their right to self-determination.
The campaign, organised by the World Kashmir Awareness Forum (WKAF), aimed to draw global attention to what it described as India’s ongoing occupation of the disputed territory. The trucks circulated around key areas, including the UN headquarters and Times Square, reaching large crowds with striking slogans and visuals demanding international action.
According to WKAF, the initiative sought to remind the global community of its obligations under UN Security Council resolutions, which affirm the right of the Kashmiri people to decide their political status through a UN-supervised plebiscite.
The digital screens carried messages including “End Indian Colonization of Kashmir,” “Hold India Accountable for War Crimes,” and “Kashmiris Reject Indian Occupation — UN Resolution Only Solution.”
WKAF President Dr. Ghulam N. Mir said the campaign was part of ongoing efforts to keep Kashmir’s plight visible on the world stage.
Recalling historical atrocities in the region, he cited the mass killings of Muslims in Jammu in 1947, describing them as an attempt at ethnic cleansing under the forces of Maharaja Hari Singh, aided by militias aligned with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Dr. Mir said the episode remained a “dark chapter in human history” and underscored the urgency of international intervention to prevent further violations in Indian-administered Kashmir.
