ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed the federal and provincial authorities to accelerate relief and rehabilitation operations for flood-affected people, stressing that the government would not rest until the complete rehabilitation of all affected families was ensured.
Chairing a detailed review meeting via video link from New York—shortly after addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)—the prime minister said he had raised the voice of Pakistanis impacted by climate-induced disasters before the international community. He reminded that developing countries like Pakistan are continuously suffering the consequences of climate change despite contributing the least to the global crisis.

The prime minister instructed Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal to closely monitor the entire process of relief and rehabilitation and to convene regular review meetings. He further directed the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to maintain close coordination with provincial governments and their respective disaster management authorities (PDMAs) for swift and effective response.
Underscoring urgency, PM Shehbaz ordered the completion of crop and infrastructure damage assessments on an emergency basis so that planning for recovery, including compensation and agricultural support, could be undertaken without delay. He asked the authorities to give special attention to the needs of farmers and affected households.

The prime minister also instructed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to expedite the restoration of the M-5 Motorway section damaged by flooding from the Sutlej River. The breach near Jalalpur Pirwala, he directed, must be repaired immediately. For this purpose, the secretary communications and NHA chairman were tasked with visiting the affected section without delay and preparing a detailed report.
The meeting also discussed health and agricultural challenges in the flood-hit areas. PM Shehbaz directed all departments to adopt urgent measures to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases and ensure the availability of clean drinking water. He further emphasised the need to identify and cultivate suitable crops in the affected regions to restore livelihoods and food security.
Chief secretaries of all four provinces, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, attended the meeting. NDMA Chairman briefed the participants on the latest situation, informing that approximately 350,000 people had so far returned home from relief camps and tent settlements. In Sindh, while some families remained in camps, rapid receding of floodwaters would soon allow their return as well.
The meeting was also updated on the ongoing distribution of food and relief supplies. The Punjab government was commended for taking exemplary measures to rehabilitate affected populations. Suggestions were presented on addressing crop losses and farmer rehabilitation, which were noted for further action.
The prime minister concluded by directing that a comprehensive damage assessment report be compiled and presented within one week to enable forward planning for long-term rehabilitation and recovery.
