THARPARKAR: Scores of peacocks have reportedly died in Tharparkar due to rising temperatures and disease, with local residents claiming the toll has crossed 100 in recent weeks.
Wildlife officials confirmed receiving reports from several villages in Mithi Tehsil but did not disclose an official count.
Deputy Conservator Mir Ijaz Talpur stated that climate change and water scarcity were causing illness and death among the peacock population. “We’ve been getting reports for three days and have sent a team to Bhimasar village for treatment,” he said.
Residents alleged that over 300 peacocks have died across the district since the beginning of the year. Videos of the dead birds have been widely circulated on social media by concerned villagers.
Dr Suwai Mal, Deputy Director of the Poultry Department, explained that high temperatures could affect peacocks’ neurological systems, but said treatment through multivitamins and antibiotics is possible. He added that the department is prepared to support the Wildlife Department whenever called upon.
Locals criticised wildlife officials for failing to act swiftly despite the bird being declared Sindh’s national symbol. They urged authorities to establish treatment camps in affected areas to reduce further losses.
