KARACHI: The Miyazaki mango, renowned as the world’s most expensive mango variety, has made its debut in Pakistan, specifically in Karachi’s Malir district.
This exotic fruit, originally cultivated in Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture, is celebrated for its vibrant red and purple hues, exceptional sweetness, and creamy texture.
In international markets, Miyazaki mangoes command prices ranging from $800 to $900 per kilogram, equivalent to approximately Rs250,000 to Rs300,000 in Pakistan.
The successful cultivation of this premium mango in Pakistan is attributed to Ghulam Hashim Noorani, a farmer from Malir’s Memon Goth area. Six years ago, Noorani imported a Miyazaki mango sapling from Japan and began nurturing it in Karachi’s climate. With meticulous care and adaptation to local conditions, the sapling thrived, leading to the production of high-quality Miyazaki mangoes .
The Miyazaki mango is distinguished by its deep purple color, fiberless pulp, and rich, aromatic flavor. Its unique characteristics have earned it nicknames such as “Eggs of Sunshine” and “Dinosaur’s Egg.”
The fruit’s cultivation in Pakistan not only introduces a new variety to the local market but also positions the country to tap into the lucrative international demand for this premium fruit.
Currently, the Miyazaki mangoes grown in Karachi are being sold at staggering prices, reaching up to Rs300,000 per kilogram. This development marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s agricultural sector, showcasing the potential for cultivating high-value exotic fruits domestically.
