Pakistan warns UNSC against India’s ‘malevolent designs’ to block water flow

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, condemned India’s attempt to block water flow guaranteed to Pakistan under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), calling it a “grave violation of international law.” Speaking at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on ‘Protecting Water in Armed Conflict’, Jadoon emphasized India’s move to suspend the treaty as an act of aggression, and warned against using water as a weapon.

India had earlier suspended participation in the IWT following tensions in Kashmir, including the April attack in Pahalgam, which India blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan denied any involvement. Ambassador Jadoon also condemned India’s threat to starve Pakistan by blocking its water supply, calling it a dangerous stance.

Jadoon urged the UNSC to act decisively against violations of international law and humanitarian law that threaten peace and security. He reiterated that Pakistan would never accept any attempt by India to impede its water rights, as water from the Indus River system is vital for the survival of 240 million Pakistanis.

The Pakistani diplomat also called for full adherence to international humanitarian law (IHL) and human rights laws to protect water resources during conflicts.
