China calls for peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue

BEIJING: Backing the UN resolutions on the disputed Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK) region, China on Tuesday called for peaceful resolution of the issue.

“The Kashmir issue is an issue left over from history between India and Pakistan,” said Mao Ning, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman.

“It should be resolved peacefully based on the UN Charter, Security Council resolution and bilateral agreements,” Mao told reporters, according to Beijing-based daily Global Times.

Beijing’s statement came after India’s top court on Monday upheld the August 2019 decision by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strip IIOJK of its special status and further divide the region into two federally controlled Union Territories.
