Army will continue acting as bulwark against terrorism to safeguard country: COAS

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir on Friday appreciated the high morale and unflinching resolve of the troops, reiterating that “Pakistan Army will continue acting as a bulwark against terrorism to safeguard the nation from this scourge.”

According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, the COAS stated this during his visit to Bannu, a day after nine brave soldiers embraced Shahadat when a bike-borne suicide bomber blew himself near military convoy in Jani Khel area of Bannu.

The COAS was briefed on the ongoing operations and overall security situation.

Gen Asim Munir also visited CMH Bannu to inquire after the health and well-being of the injured soldiers.

While interacting with officers and troops deployed in the area, the COAS emphasized, “The Army, Law Enforcement Agencies and the nation can never be coerced by the cowardly tactics of the terrorists, who have a misbelief that they can challenge the iron resolve of the soldiers and writ of the state.” He further said, “We have fought for long and will continue to fight the menace of terrorism till the end. The nation pays rich tribute to those who have laid their lives and their sacrifices will forever be honoured.”

Earlier on arrival, COAS was received by Commander Peshawar Corps.

A day earlier, at least nine soldiers were martyred in a suicide attack on security forces convoy in Janikhel area of district Bannu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The suicide bomber, riding a motorcycle, blew himself near the military convoy as a result nine soldiers embraced martyrdom while five others sustained injured.

The armed forces said that they were determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of soldiers further strengthened their resolve, ISPR.

Terrorist killed, soldier martyred in Tirah fire exchange

Meanwhile, on night 31 Aug/1 September 2023, fire exchange took place between own troops and terrorists in general area Tirah, Khyber District, the ISPR said.

In a statement, the ISPR said that own troops effectively engaged the terrorists’ location, resulting in killing of one terrorist. The killed terrorist remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces and killing of innocent civilians, the ISPR said.

However, during intense exchange of fire, Havildar Muntazir Shah (age 36 Years, Resident of Sawabi District) having fought gallantly, embraced shahadat.

Sanitization of the area is being carried out to eliminate any other terrorists found in the area.

Funeral of nine martyrs

Meanwhile, funeral prayers of soldiers who embraced martyrdom in yesterday’s motorcycle-borne suicide blast in Jani Khel area of Bannu were offered on Friday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated.

In a statement, the ISPR said that the martyrs “will be laid to rest with full military honour in their respective hometowns”.

The funeral prayers were attended by senior serving military and civil administrative officers and troops.

“Armed Forces of Pakistan stand resolute and committed to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the motherland at all costs,” the military’s media wing maintained in its statement.
