Sharif unlikely to return to Pakistan soon

LAHORE: Nawaz Sharif, the supreme leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is unlikely to make a comeback to Pakistan in the near future, according to reports citing members of his party.

Sharif, who was convicted in graft cases by an accountability court before the 2018 general elections, had traveled to London in 2019 on the pretext of medical treatment and has remained there since then.

Recently, he visited Dubai and met with Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) politicians, sparking a debate in the media about his potential return to Pakistan. However, a cabinet member source said he will not be returning at this time.

Sharif has been convicted in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and the Avenfield House references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) following the 2016 Panama Papers revelations.

His appeals are currently pending in the relevant courts.

Sources emphasized that the Sharif family is aware of his plans to return. They said: “In my understanding and based on the information I’m hearing from within the party, Nawaz will likely return around November. By then, these legal issues will be resolved.”

Regarding the need for a meeting with the leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the UAE, a major ally of the coalition government, the source mentioned that there are still some matters to be decided before the next elections.
