WASHINGTON: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said Pakistan would continue to work with the United States to promote peace and stability in the south Asian region.
The foreign minister expressed these views in a meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.
“Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman met today with Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The Deputy Secretary and the Foreign Minister discussed Pakistan’s continuing efforts to recover from devastating floods and noted the upcoming January 9 International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan in Geneva,” said Ned Price, a spokesperson of the State Department.
Sherman also expressed condolences for lives lost in recent Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacks, noting the two nations were committed to strengthening counter-terrorism cooperation.
The law-and-order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has gone south over the last few weeks as an increase has been noticed in threats and attacks on security forces and high-profile politicians.
Later, in a tweet, Zardari recalled he had a productive meeting with Sherman, where he appreciated the role of the US in flood relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
“Pakistan and the United States will continue to work together to further enhance and diversify bilateral relations, and promote peace and stability in the region,” he said.
In a separate meeting with Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat member of the American Senate, the foreign minister thanked him for his steadfast support for Pakistan.
The two sides discussed Congress’ important role in strengthening Pakistan-US cooperation in flood relief measures.
