Islamabad gets AI-powered cameras to expand surveillance

ISLAMABAD: Nearly 200 high-tech surveillance cameras have been installed at the entry and exit points of Islamabad to further beef up the security and make surveillance more potent, an official said.

The purpose of the newly installed artificial intelligence-enabled cameras was to ensure broader online monitoring and surveillance as well as help the police curb crimes and eliminate criminal elements in the city, Romail Akram, director general of the Islamabad Safe City project, told Xinhua.

All the vehicles entering or leaving the capital are being monitored through these smart cameras, the official said, adding that after the new installation, the total number of surveillance cameras in Islamabad has increased to 2,400, bringing a sense of security and peace among the residents.

He said the government has been taking measures to install more of such surveillance cameras in the city over the next few months to fully cover Islamabad.

However, the $125 million project inaugurated in 2016 has so far failed to produce the desired results and achieve its objectives.

Police officials say neither a single incident nor crime was prevented nor any criminal arrested with the help of the system. Besides, two scanners, which were part of the project, also disappeared without being traced.
