Suspect in murder of Karachi journalist remanded in police custody

KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi on Monday remanded the suspect in the murder of a Karachi-based journalist in police custody until March 11.

Thieves on a motorcycle shot and killed Athar Mateen, a TV producer who worked for the SAMAA news channel, when he tried to ram them with his car to prevent a street robbery last week.

Police produced the suspect, Ashraf, before the court on Monday seeking his physical remand.

He was brought to the court in an armoured personnel carrier with his face covered with a piece of cloth.

The investigation officer in the case informed the court Ashraf was involved in the murder and said his custody was needed for investigation purposes.

The court handed over the detainee to the police and directed them to produce him at the next hearing on March 12 along with a progress report.

Several suspects have already been taken into custody, some of them from as far away as Balochistan, on suspicion of their involvement in the murder.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had condemned the “brutal murder” and expressed sorrows with the grieved family. He had directed law enforcement to take every possible step to bring the perpetrators to justice.
