ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Tuesday said that the people could get to know what kind of ‘accountability’ was being done in the country only if the cameras were allowed inside the courts.
Speaking to the media outside an accountability court (AC) in Islamabad, he said he challenged the government to install cameras in the courts so that the genuineness of the cases it had framed against us could be exposed through the live coverage of their hearing.
He said that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government would be made to pay for what he alleged each and every ‘excess’ it had committed against the opposition.
Abbasi further said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had disclosed in its report that Prime Minister Imran Khan owned ‘illegal’ companies.
“There is a mention in the report of a company’s account or a bank statement which ‘the selected’ has hidden from the ECP,” he said, and asked whether the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman had read that report.
“The question is when the courts could disqualify a sitting prime minister (Nawaz Sharif), why are they silent now?” Abbasi asked.
The PML-N leader claimed that the prime minister had not submitted a single bank statement so far. “Former chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar is yet to explain his position with respect to the allegation that he had influenced the cases against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz,” he added.
Former prime minister said there were reports that the government was planning to levy more taxes on people. “The government is yet to divulge details of the agreements it had signed with the IMF. Why is the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) governor being appointed as a viceroy of the IMF here in Pakistan?” he questioned.
He went on to add that as many as 22 people died in freezing temperatures in Murree. “But nobody was there to help them in that wilderness; nobody was there to clear the road of thick sheets of snow,” Abbasi said, and regretted that contrary to that there were hundreds of policemen who had been deployed outside the accountability court today.
“The Punjab chief minister and his advisors did not utter a word of consolation for the families of the victims,” the PML-N leader said.
