Houthi missile attack on Saudi city condemned

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned a missile attack on the Saudi Arabian city of Samtah that resulted in one killed and another injured.

The Houthi missile attack on Friday night hit a car maintenance workshop in Samtah, killing a Saudi citizen and a Yemeni migrant worker, and injuring seven others, including a Yemeni migrant worker, according to the state-owned Saudi Press Agency.

Two other people were injured when another shell hit a workshop in the same city.

“Such attacks not only violate international law but also threaten peace and security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the region,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said in a statement issued late Saturday.

Calling for an immediate cessation of these attacks, Pakistan reaffirmed its full support and solidarity with Saudi Arabia against any threats to its security and territorial integrity, the statement added.

Yemen has been engulfed by violence and instability since 2014, when Iran-aligned Houthi rebels captured much of the country, including the capital Sana’a.

A Saudi-led coalition aimed at reinstating the Yemeni government has worsened the situation, causing one of the world’s worst human-made humanitarian crises, with nearly 80 percent, or about 30 million people, needing humanitarian assistance and protection, and more than 13 million are in danger of starvation, according to UN estimates.

As the war has dragged on, Houthis have stepped up the brazenness of their attacks on Saudi Arabia. Using drones and missiles, the Houthis have launched attacks on Saudi airports, oil facilities and military sites.

While Houthi attacks have failed to cause massive devastation, they have been enough to rattle global oil markets.
