New local government law challenged in LHC

LAHORE: The Punjab Local Government Ordinance, 2021, adopted earlier this month was challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday.

Sialkot District Council Chairperson Hina Arshad challenged the ordinance maintaining it was in contradiction with the Constitution.

The applicant said the administrative authority has been given to the administrators in the Punjab Local Government Act, 2019 although it was declared null and void by the high court earlier.

Arshad urged the court to strike down sections 3 and 71 of the latest ordinance.

Punjab Governor December 13 completed the final stage of the new ordinance by signing the document.

For the first time, the people will be able to elect city mayors directly.
