Pakistan wants Afghanistan situation to remain stable: Fawad

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Friday said that Pakistan wants the situation in Afghanistan to remain stable.

In a statement, the minister said that Pakistan’s proposal on Afghanistan had not been paid heed in the past.

He said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had suggested that former Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani should not hold elections in the country, adding that Ghani did not accept the proposal of the prime minister and the situation is now in front of everyone.

He said that so far Afghan refugees have not entered Pakistan. The minister said that presently the situation in Afghanistan do not warrant the people to leave.

He said that Pakistan has influence on Taliban but not control, adding that Pakistan is trying for reopening of Kabul airport as soon as possible.

Earlier on Monday, the minister had warned of potential spillovers from the Afghan crisis and said that the world would have to deal with a “huge mess” if Pakistan’s advice on the war-ravaged country is ignored.

He had said in an interview with TRT World that the world must listen to Pakistan as “in the recent past, Pakistan’s advice was not paid heed to, and if Pakistan and Imran Khan’s advice was listened to, the situation would have been different.”

The minister had added that the situation in Afghanistan is “very worrying” for Pakistan, recalling that “we had to deal with the problems when the Soviet Union left Afghanistan in 1988.”
