LHC suspends tax notice to Sharif family’s sugar business

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday suspended an income tax notice of about Rs2.33 billion sent by the Federal Board of Revenue to Ittefaq Sugar Mills, a Sahiwal-based sugar production unit owned by the family of deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

The high court also ordered the Inland Revenue commissioner to decide on the appeal filed by the business against the notice within 30 days.

Justice Jawad Hassan took up the petition filed by the business against the notice while their counsel, Muhammad Mansha Sukhera, appeared on their behalf.

Sukhera told the court the FBR had sent a notice to his client without taking into consideration its income. “This prompted us to file an appeal with the Inland Revenue whose commissioner twice granted a stay but did not decide on the appeal,” he said, adding the commissioner could not grant stay in the case for a third time.

He further recalled the high court granting a stay in such cases is not unprecedented. “Therefore, the court is requested to suspend the notice sent to my client,” he said.
