New local government system to run mega cities soon: minister

ISLAMABAD: The government will soon introduce a new devolution plan to run major urban centres to address the urgent and immediate challenges, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib said on Sunday.

“The transfer of power at the grassroots and empowerment of the public in the real sense is the main priority of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government”, Habib said while talking to a news channel.

Minister deplored the previous government for running a one-man show in Punjab and consuming power in their persons and families, and said the new local government system will empower the public.

He said when the PTI came to power in 2018, the economy was in shambles but now the policies of the incumbent government were bringing revolutionary changes with far-reaching welfare impacts for the people.

Habib said the government has set a new example of transparency and the country was moving ahead towards the goal of development and prosperity.

Responding to a question, he said the government was committed to introducing judicial, as well as electoral, legislation to “reform the system in an aim to bring speedy justice and transparency”.

For the first time in Pakistan’s history, a government had also set a trend of signing performance contracts with ministries to improve governance structure and service delivery, he observed.

It was also for a first time that a government was working for the betterment of the poor and standing against the mafias, he claimed.

He said the government, in line with the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan, was taking various practical steps for the improvement of the civil service.

It was also active in providing employment opportunities to the youth and focused on the implementation of women protection bills to empower women, Habib added.
