LAHORE: Police have registered a case following an alleged attack and robbery of YouTuber Rajab Butt during his appearance at a court in Karachi, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The first information report was lodged on the complaint of Butt’s lawyer, Mian Ali Ashfaq, who nominated advocates Riaz Ali Solangi and Abdul Fatah, along with 15 to 20 unidentified lawyers. The incident allegedly took place on Monday at Karachi’s City Courts.
According to the FIR, Riaz Ali Solangi is the complainant in an earlier case registered against Butt at Haidri Police Station. The report states that when Butt arrived at City Court West for a hearing on December 29, he was allegedly attacked by Solangi, Fatah and their associates, resulting in injuries. The complaint also alleges that Ashfaq and other members of Butt’s legal team were threatened and harassed during the incident.
The FIR further claims that Butt was carrying a bag containing Rs300,000 at the time, which was allegedly snatched during the assault. Although the bag was later returned, the cash was reportedly missing.
Ashfaq alleged that after the initial attack, the lawyers forcibly brought Butt before the court, where he was again threatened. Police have registered the case under multiple sections related to rioting, robbery, criminal intimidation and causing injuries, and the investigation has been assigned to the Kharadar Division police.
In a statement shared on social media following the incident, Ashfaq said his client was attacked with intent to cause serious harm and sustained injuries. Witnesses present at the court said the situation escalated after a verbal exchange between Butt and several lawyers following the hearing, eventually turning into a scuffle.
