Trump says US will remove Turkey sanctions, weigh F-35 sale
Donald Trump said in Ankara that the United States would lift sanctions on Turkiye and consider a sale of F-35 jets. The measures were imposed in 2020 after Ankara acquired Russian S-400 systems.

ANKARA: United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Washington would lift sanctions on Turkiye and decide on a possible sale of F-35 fighter jets, as he met Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of a Nato summit in Ankara.
The sanctions were imposed in 2020 under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act after Turkiye bought Russian S-400 air defence systems. Washington also ejected Ankara from the F-35 programme at the time, a step Turkiye has described as unjust and illegal.
Speaking to reporters at the start of his meeting with Erdogan, Trump said the sanctions would be removed.
“We’re going to be taking the sanctions off,” he stated.
Trump was expected to back a potential F-35 sale during the Ankara visit, according to two sources familiar with the matter cited by Reuters, although legal and congressional obstacles have not yet been fully cleared.
Trump arrived in Ankara ahead of the alliance summit, which was due to begin with a dinner later in the day. His meeting with Erdogan came before he joined other Nato leaders for the gathering.
