China urges respect for Sudan's sovereignty, calls for urgent humanitarian action

ISLAMABAD: China has called on the international community to intensify humanitarian efforts in Sudan while underscoring the need to respect the country's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, as the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) held an urgent debate on the deteriorating situation in and around El-Obeid, North Kordofan.

Addressing the 62nd session of the UNHRC in Geneva from July 3 to 6, Li Xiaomei, Deputy Head of the Chinese delegation to the United Nations, expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis and stressed that the large-scale atrocities witnessed in El-Fasher must not be repeated.

She said the fundamental human rights of the Sudanese people, particularly their right to life, must be effectively safeguarded, urging the international community to work collectively to alleviate the suffering of civilians affected by the conflict.

Li emphasized that discussions within the Human Rights Council should remain strictly within its mandate while fully respecting Sudan's sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity.

She also urged the council to give due consideration to the views and aspirations of the Sudanese people, stressing that sustainable peace could only be achieved through dialogue, negotiation and a political process led by the people of Sudan.

Reaffirming China's consistent position, Li said the international community should facilitate a lasting and peaceful resolution to the crisis through constructive engagement rather than external interference.
