BEIJING: Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Thursday called for stronger international cooperation to safeguard world peace and promote shared prosperity as he addressed the opening ceremony of the 13th World Peace Forum at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Han said the world is undergoing profound and accelerating changes, with growing uncertainties and frequent regional and international tensions.

In the face of these challenges, he noted that President Xi Jinping has proposed a series of important initiatives, including the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, which offer China’s solutions to address global issues.

He noted that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the founding of the United Nations. Against this backdrop. China is ready to work with all countries to advance the cause of peace and development, and to build a better world together, Han added.

The Chinese vice president emphasized the need to draw lessons from history and jointly uphold the post-war international order. He called for firm support for the UN-centered international system, international law, and the basic norms governing international relations based on the UN Charter.

He also urged the international community to enhance solidarity and coordination, uphold true multilateralism, and work toward a fairer and more effective global governance system through mutual respect and equal consultation.

Han underlined the importance of openness and cooperation, advocating for a stable and open international environment that supports inclusive economic growth, safeguards multilateral trade, and ensures the smooth functioning of global industrial and supply chains.

He further emphasized the need for countries to help one another on the path to modernization, placing development at the heart of the global agenda and addressing the concerns of developing countries in order to reduce inequalities and imbalances.

The forum brought together some 400 participants, including former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, former Belgian Prime Minister and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, foreign diplomats, and scholars from both China and abroad.
