TikTok outlines election integrity measures for general elections

ISLAMABAD: TikTok has disclosed its comprehensive approach to ensuring and safeguarding election integrity on its platform, as the country gears up for the parliamentary elections scheduled for February 2024.

As per details shared by the company, this initiative highlights TikTok’s dedication to being a responsible and trustworthy source of information, particularly during pivotal civic events.

With a commitment to combat misinformation, violence, and hate speech in accordance with its Community Guidelines, available in both English and Urdu, TikTok is focused on eradicating misleading information related to civic processes such as voter registration, candidate eligibility, ballot counting, and election results. The platform strictly prohibits content that intimidates voters, suppresses voting, or incites violence. Utilizing a global team of over 40,000 personnel along with advanced technology, TikTok ensures user safety, collaborating with intelligence firms, industry partners, and civil society organizations.

In the fight against misinformation, TikTok collaborates with local and regional fact-checkers, ensuring the consistent and accurate removal of election-related misinformation. Content flagged for review or identified as unsubstantiated is kept off the For You Feed recommendation, with both viewers and creators receiving alerts about the potential misleading nature of such content.

A pivotal aspect of TikTok’s strategy is the introduction of the Pakistan Election Center on the platform, accessible in both English and Urdu. This hub directs users to authoritative information on the election, offering details on voting procedures and locations. Leveraging advanced technology and local language support, TikTok aims to create a secure environment devoid of any violations of its Community Guidelines.

In alignment with its commitment to an authentic user experience, TikTok reiterates its stance against political ads. The platform has specific policies for government, politician, or political party accounts, restricting their ability to engage in financial transactions through advertising, fundraising, or TikTok monetization tools.

TikTok’s proactive efforts in fortifying the integrity of its platform align with its broader mission to inspire creativity and joy among users. Acknowledging the impact of global events on creative expression, TikTok remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting its community in Pakistan and worldwide.
