India’s SIU arrests 58 persons in IIOJK on freedom charges

SRINAGAR: Working on the Israeli pattern in Palestine, India’s dreaded Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has arrested 58 persons on charges of being involved in pro-freedom and anti-India activities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

A senior police official while confirming the arrests said the detainees belong to various districts of the Kashmir valley.

“We are investigating 40 cases,” the Police official added. He said that the SIU had so far attached seven residential houses linked to pro-freedom activists in Kashmir.

The senior Police official said that the SIU also arrested 58 persons linked to freedom activities, which he described as terrorism.

“These people were arrested during the investigations,” he said. The senior Police officer said that most of these cases come under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Taking cue from Israel, India created the State Investigation Agency to curb the ongoing freedom movement in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh supervises the SIU, which has separate branches in every district that work under district Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

Since its formation, the SIU has carried out frequent raids across Kashmir in synergy with paramilitary forces deployed in Kashmir. Police last year said that they would attach the property of those who “willfully” shelter freedom activists. The DGP had ordered establishment of Special Investigation Units (SIUs) in June last year.
