Sports diplomacy to deepen Pakistan-Sri Lanka bonds

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Thursday pledged to deepen cooperation in sports to strengthen people-to-people ties, officials said on Thursday.

The commitment was made during a meeting between Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar and Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sugath Thilakaratne. Both sides highlighted sports, particularly cricket, as a key platform to promote unity, mutual understanding, and youth engagement between the two nations.

Tarar emphasized that sports diplomacy reinforces long-standing bilateral relations built on trust and shared values. He thanked the Sri Lankan delegation for visiting Pakistan despite the ongoing budget session in Colombo, describing it as a sign of the enduring friendship between the countries.

The Sri Lankan delegation also praised Pakistan for hosting the Tri-Nation Cricket Series and confirmed their attendance at the ongoing matches, commending the arrangements and hospitality extended by the government.

Senior Sri Lankan officials, including High Commissioner Rear Admiral Fred Seneviratne and Deputy High Commissioner Christie Ruben, participated in the meeting, reflecting the broader diplomatic and defence ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
