Punjab inaugurates double-storey barracks at Kot Lakhpat Jail with modern facilities

LAHORE: Kot Lakhpat Jail has expanded its capacity with the addition of five new double-storey barracks, capable of accommodating 2,000 inmates, officials confirmed.

The inauguration was conducted by Task Force Chairman Rana Minan Khan and Punjab Interior Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi. During the event, the officials interacted with inmates to understand their concerns and directed that free legal aid be provided to prisoners unable to afford lawyers.

Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi instructed that all inmates be provided with warm blankets suitable for the season. He also emphasized that prison psychologists should maintain regular contact with inmates experiencing mental health issues and offer counselling services.

The official spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department noted that the expansion is part of ongoing efforts to improve living conditions within the province’s jails. The Punjab prison visitation app, now available across all jails, has been used by more than 850 citizens to schedule visits with relatives, providing advance online booking and reducing administrative delays.

The expansion of Kot Lakhpat Jail is intended to enhance inmate welfare while ensuring orderly management and rehabilitation programs within the facility.
