LAHORE: The Akbari Gate Police have registered a case against model Azbia Khan and photographer Zain Shah for shooting a video at the historic Wazir Khan Mosque in Lahore without prior permission, violating the sanctity of the mosque.
The case was filed following a complaint from Mohammad Awais, an official with the Walled City Lahore Authority (WCLA), after a video showing the model in what was described as an “inappropriate” outfit was posted on social media. The video, recorded four days ago, quickly gained attention and sparked public outrage.
According to the WCLA official, the actions of the model and photographer had caused harm to the reputation of the department and were seen as disrespectful to the mosque’s sanctity. “The video was shot without any authorization, and the model’s attire was not appropriate for a mosque setting,” Awais stated in his complaint.
This incident mirrors a similar controversy in August 2020, when a case was filed against actor Saba Qamar and singer Bilal Saeed for recording a music video at the mosque. The backlash over that incident led to the Punjab Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department banning film and drama shoots at mosques and shrines in the province.
The WCLA official emphasized that the mosque, known for its rich history and architectural significance, should be respected by all visitors. “Respect for religious sites is paramount, and such actions cannot be allowed to undermine their sanctity,” Awais added.
Following the registration of the FIR, the police are investigating the matter further, with both the model and photographer expected to face legal consequences for their actions. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting cultural and religious heritage in public spaces, especially those with historical significance like the Wazir Khan Mosque.
The Lahore police have confirmed that they are looking into the incident and will take appropriate action as the investigation progresses.
