TARBELA: The spillways of Tarbela Dam were opened on Saturday night after the water level at the dam reached 1,546 feet, which is 96% of its total capacity. This action resulted in a significant increase in water flow at the River Indus, reaching nearly 250,000 cusecs. In response, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a warning, advising residents in nearby areas to stay clear of water channels.
Before opening the spillways, the NDMA informed all relevant authorities and urged residents of low-lying regions to remain vigilant and cooperate with local officials. Additionally, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab reported that the water level at Mangla Dam stood at 1,205.25 feet, which is 63% of its capacity.
Flood conditions were observed at Chashma Barrage in the Indus River, while water flow at the Tarbela, Kalabagh, Taunsa, Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri Barrages remained normal. The water flow at critical points in the Jhelum, Sutlej, and Kabul rivers was also normal.
The Ravi River maintained a steady flow at its main points, though the Basantar Nullah, a tributary, continued to experience a low-level flood. There were no reported water flows in major hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan Division’s Koh-e-Suleman area.
As a precautionary measure, the PDMA director general urged the public to remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon season. Section 144 has been imposed around rivers, canals, and streams, and authorities have advised against swimming in any rivers, canals, or ponds during this time.
