Muharram moon likely to be sighted on June 26, marks new Hijri year

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has announced that the crescent moon of Muharram ul Haram 1447 is likely to be sighted on the evening of June 26, with the first day of the month and the new Hijri year expected to begin on June 27.

According to Suparco’s forecast, the moon is expected to be born on June 25 at 3:32 PM, with an age of approximately 28 hours and 15 minutes by sunset on June 26.

The expected duration between sunset and moonset at coastal areas will be 75 minutes, which Suparco says provides favorable conditions for the moon’s visibility.

In line with this, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on Thursday to sight the Muharram crescent, and Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committees will also convene separately at their respective headquarters to confirm the moon sighting.

Suparco also indicated that Youm-e-Ashur, the 10th of Muharram, is likely to fall on July 6 in Pakistan.
