Despite lapse of month, breach in MMD canal yet to be plugged

BADIN: Thousands of residents of District Badin from different union councils have been facing numerous difficulties due to unplugged breach in Mirpurkhas Main Drain (MMD) of Dhoro-Puran Canal.

According to details, despite lapse of a month, the authorities concerned including the Irrigation Department have appeared unable to plug the 300-feet-long breach in Mirpurkhas Main Drain (MMD), Dhoro-Puran Canal. The breach has wrecked havoc in six union councils of Taluka Tando Bago of District Badin including Hayat Khaskheli, Saman Sarkar, Khairpur Gamboh, Sangi Pharho, Malkani Sharif, Oliya Jarkas and others. The floodwater from this breach has displaced thousands of residents of these six UCs besides destroying standing crops and infrastructure.

The residents of these union councils have been residing in roadside camps, tent cities and in villages still flooded with rainwater. Apart from human beings, lives of thousands of heads of livestock including buffaloes, cows, goats, sheep, camels, donkey and poultry are at stake. The residents regretted that no tangible effort could be made so far for survival of livestock and other animals, adding that people have although suffered losses of billions of rupees in shape of standing crops destruction over thousands of acres. They feared that if efforts were not made for survival of livestock, it might brought economic destruction in future ahead.

Other hand, hundreds of the people have also held protest against the apathy of the authorities concerned who were according to them not much interested to plug the breach in MMD canal, accusing them of lethargy and dillydallying to drown more population of Taluka Tando Bago.

They informed thousand of population including children, women were forced to reside in roadside camps and tent cities without having basic facilities even difficult to get meal once in a day. Other hand, people who were settled in the camps were facing issues including dirking water, food and emergency medical facilities.

Social activists have appealed the NDMA, PDMA and provincial government to come forward for assistance of the flood victims. They also urged the government authorities to take tangible steps for plugging breach in the MMD Canal- Dhoro-Puran in district Badin.
