Miftah departs for US to meet IMF officials for revival of loan facility

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail on Thursday left for United States to meet with International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials for the revival of a loan facility that was stalled following the ouster of Imran Khan government earlier this month.

Earlier, the minister tweeted that the purpose of the visit is to “put back on track our IMF program that PTI and IK (Imran Khan) derailed, thus endangering our economy”.

He added that he would travel to London on the way, where he would meet PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.

Within the new coalition government, Miftah earlier expressed his resolve to get the programme back on track to revive the “ruined economy”.

The minister said that government would do whatever is necessary to restore the programme. He said the government can reduce public sector development spending with other necessary budgetary discipline arrangements.

“We will restore the programme. If the government has to tighten its belt, it will do so,” he said adding that no extra burden would be put on the people.
