ISLAMABAD: Islamabad’s Red Zone on Wednesday remained completely sealed off to the general public as extraordinary security measures continued in anticipation of the arrival of foreign delegations.
To ensure foolproof security, not only Islamabad Police but also additional personnel from Punjab were deployed at sensitive locations, creating a heavily fortified security environment across the federal capital.
These measures in place for several days have significantly disrupted daily life in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The closure of major arteries, widespread checkpoints, and stringent security checks have severely restricted movement.
With public transport suspended and the metro bus service still not operational as of Wednesday, residents faced considerable difficulties.
Office workers, students, and daily commuters were forced to rely on expensive alternative means of transportation, resulting in a noticeable surge in fares.
The situation in Blue Area, the city’s main commercial hub, remained far from normal. Several offices and shops were either partially open or completely shut while business activity stayed sluggish due to a visible decline in customer turnout.
Similar conditions were observed in other markets, where traders either operated for limited hours or chose to remain closed altogether.
Meanwhile restrictions on the entry of heavy vehicles into the city have disrupted the supply of essential food items.
The transportation of fruits and vegetables has been affected leading not only to shortages but also to a significant increase in prices.
Residents reported that rising costs of daily necessities are putting considerable strain on household budgets, while in some areas the availability of fresh produce has also declined.
Security in and around the Red Zone remained exceptionally tight with a heavy presence of police and other law enforcement agencies.
Continuous patrolling was observed, alongside multiple checkpoints across the city, Strict checking at entry and exit points further hampered traffic flow, causing prolonged delays.
In a statement posted on social media, the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad dismissed a circulating notification regarding revised market timings as fake. He clarified that no changes had been made to the operating hours of shops and markets, urging citizens to rely only on official sources and avoid unverified information.
Public reaction to the situation has been mixed, Some citizens acknowledged that such stringent security arrangements are necessary in the national interest and for maintaining a positive international role even if they come at the cost of temporary inconvenience.
However a large number of residents expressed serious concern over the growing difficulties in daily life.
According to citizens, road closures and the lack of public transport have effectively paralyzed routine activities with even short commutes taking hours. The suspension of the metro bus service has particularly impacted the middle class as alternative travel options are considerably more expensive.
Old Blue Area which has been facing closures for nearly two weeks, remains among the worst affected.
Business owners also voiced concern stating that the lack of customers has severely impacted their earnings with many reporting negligible income over the past several days Some warned that prolonged disruption could lead to worsening financial conditions.
Despite the challenges a sense of cautious optimism persists among certain segments of the population. They believe that if these security measures are aimed at achieving a larger objective such as regional peace or a significant diplomatic breakthrough then the hardships may be a necessary, albeit temporary, sacrifice.
Overall however urban life remains caught in a state of uncertainty, marked by both hardship and hope.
