RAWALPINDI: Security forces killed at least 27 terrorists belonging to the Indian-sponsored Fitna al-Khwarij in a series of intelligence-based operations in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district over the past 72 hours, the military’s media wing said on Sunday.

“Following intense fierce exchanges of fire, in the last seventy-two hours, twenty-seven khwarij belonging to Indian-sponsored Fitna al-Khwarij have been sent to hell,” said the ISPR.

The state uses the term Fitna al-Khawarij to refer to terrorists affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The statement said that weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the killed “Indian-sponsored khwarij”, who, it said, remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities and the target killing of innocent civilians.

The security forces, by neutralising this group of “khwarij”, the “heinous act” of target killing of prominent figure Shaheed Malik Saifullah Dawar in Miranshah has been avenged and the perpetrators have been brought to justice, the ISPR said.

“Sanitisation operations continue to eliminate holed up khwarij from these areas, as relentless Counter Terrorism campaign under vision ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ (as approved by Federal Apex Committee on National Action Plan) by Security Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies of Pakistan will continue at full pace to wipe out the menace of foreign-sponsored and supported terrorism from the country,” the ISPR concluded.

KP records 1,588 terror incidents as forces thwart 320 major plots

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained at the centre of Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts in 2025 as security forces intensified intelligence-based operations against militant networks amid a sharp rise in violence across the province.

The province witnessed a significant surge in militant activity during the year, with more than 500 attacks reported — a 50% increase compared to the previous year.

According to a security assessment, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 1,588 terrorism-related incidents, highlighting the scale of the security challenge across both settled and merged tribal districts.

Despite the escalation in militant attacks, security forces reportedly foiled 320 major plots during the year, while 137 police personnel embraced martyrdom in the line of duty.

The report stated that joint operations conducted by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and other security agencies resulted in the arrest of 1,244 suspected militants. It added that 420 militants were killed in intelligence-based operations (IBOs) carried out across the province.

Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Lakki Marwat, Hangu and Peshawar remained among the districts most affected by militant violence. The report noted a pattern of attacks allegedly planned and launched from across the Afghan border.

According to the CTD assessment, attacks targeting police personnel increased by 56%, rising from 327 in 2024 to 510 in 2025, underscoring the growing threat faced by frontline law-enforcement agencies.

During the year, security agencies conducted 2,791 search and intelligence-led operations, while 25 foreign militant operatives were identified. The report further stated that extortion networks operating in Peshawar and several other districts were dismantled as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

The assessment underscored the continued focus of security institutions on disrupting militant infrastructure and preventing large-scale attacks, while highlighting the persistent security challenges confronting the province.
