MURREE: Landslides triggered by recent rains continued in different parts of Murree, with two large residential buildings collapsing on Sunday along Dhaka Road in Union Council Darya Gali after being hit by a landslide.
Both structures had already been evacuated because of the danger posed by the unstable slope, and no casualties were reported in the incident. Rescue 1122 sealed off the affected area after the collapse.
Local residents said blocked culverts and drainage channels on the main and link roads had contributed to the situation. They alleged that negligence by the Highways Department caused rainwater to be diverted to one side, which then triggered the landslide.
Officials inspect affected area
On the directions of Murree Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi, Assistant Commissioner Murree retired Captain Arshad Iqbal visited the site on an emergency basis. Officials of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority accompanied him during the visit.
The assistant commissioner carried out a detailed inspection of the landslide-hit area and reviewed the extent of the damage. He directed the relevant departments to speed up relief work and stressed that all possible assistance should be provided to the affected residents.
He also called for effective safety arrangements to avoid any further losses in the area. He instructed the authorities concerned to improve the drainage system, remove debris without delay, and reopen blocked routes.
In addition, urgent measures were ordered to protect nearby localities from any further landslides as rain-related ground instability continued to affect parts of Murree.
The latest incident highlights the continuing impact of recent rainfall in the hill station, where landslides have persisted at multiple locations. Sunday’s collapse in Darya Gali added to concerns over drainage, road access and the safety of residents living near vulnerable slopes.
Authorities remained focused on relief and preventive steps at the site, including clearing obstructions and reducing the risk of additional slope failures in surrounding areas.
