Locate lost in the lashing: Karachi Chand-Raat themed event disrupted by heavy rainfall
The Karachi Locate Bazaar's Chand-Raat event faced chaos as heavy rainfall disrupted festivities, leading to panic among attendees and financial losses for vendors.

KARACHI: Karachi’s Locate Bazaar, a Chand Raat-themed outdoor event featuring food, clothing, and entertainment stalls, was disrupted by heavy rainfall, causing panic among attendees and financial losses for vendors.
The event, designed as a family-friendly pre-Eid gathering, had attracted a large crowd. Stalls offering food, bangles, mehendi, and clothing had been set up, and families had begun arriving in significant numbers earlier in the evening.
However, despite ongoing rainy weather in the city and prior forecasts indicating further showers, the event proceeded as scheduled in an open-air venue.
Rainfall that began as a drizzle intensified into a heavy downpour, leading to structural instability in several stalls. Eyewitnesses reported that poles supporting the setups began to weaken and, in some cases, collapsed, causing merchandise and materials to fall into waterlogged areas.
As conditions worsened, attendees attempted to leave the venue quickly, resulting in panic and crowd movement toward exits. The combination of rain, falling structures, and slippery ground created a chaotic situation on-site.
No immediate reports of injuries have been confirmed so far.
Vendors, however, are believed to have suffered losses, as goods including clothing items and food supplies were damaged by rainwater. Many stall owners were seen attempting to secure or recover their merchandise during the downpour.
The incident has raised concerns regarding event planning and safety measures, particularly in light of adverse weather forecasts.
What was intended to be a festive Chand Raat marketplace was ultimately cut short by the weather, leaving both visitors and vendors affected.
