Pakistan voices concern over India-Canada uranium supply agreement

Pakistan has expressed serious concerns regarding a recent uranium supply agreement between India and Canada, raising questions about the transparency and safeguards associated with the arrangement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Islamabad highlighted apprehensions that the deal could contribute to an expansion of India's fissile material stockpiles.

According to official statements, Pakistan's Foreign Office has questioned the adequacy of safeguards and the level of transparency in the uranium supply arrangement. Officials noted that India has not placed all of its nuclear facilities under international safeguards, which they argue raises significant proliferation risks.

MOFA spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stated that selective exceptions in such agreements undermine the credibility of the global non-proliferation framework. He emphasized that these exceptions could have broader implications for regional security and the effectiveness of international non-proliferation efforts.

"Selective exceptions diminish credibility of global non-proliferation framework," said MOFA spokesperson Tahir Andrabi, according to reports.

The Foreign Office further warned that the uranium supply agreement could enable India to increase its stockpiles of fissile material. Officials pointed out that the lack of comprehensive safeguards on India's nuclear facilities remains a point of contention, as it may allow for the diversion of nuclear material for purposes other than peaceful use.

Reports indicate that Pakistan has called for greater transparency and adherence to established international norms in nuclear agreements. The Foreign Office urged all parties involved to ensure that such arrangements do not compromise the objectives of non-proliferation and regional stability.

There have been no official responses from Indian or Canadian authorities regarding Pakistan's concerns as of the time of reporting. The situation continues to be monitored by regional and international observers.
